Florida high school football player dies after collapsing on the field

A Florida high school football player is being remembered as a “remarkable athlete, beloved teammate and overall exceptional young man” after he died in a collapse on the field during a game.

According to a GoFundMe campaign launched this weekend, Port St. Joe High School 12th-grader Chance Gainer, 18, died on Friday, Sept. 6. NBC News, citing Gulf District Schools Superintendent Jim Norton, reported that Gainer died during an away game at Liberty County High School. Norton described the young athlete’s death as a “tragic loss” that left the community with “deep sadness.”

“Chance was quiet, but exuded an engaging warmth and genuineness that drew people to him,” Norton said in his statement, obtained by the news agency, calling Gainer’s death “perhaps the most heartbreaking situation imaginable for a family and a community.”

NBC affiliate WJHG reported that the teen had no pulse when paramedics arrived at the game before medical personnel eventually found a pulse. Gainer was later pronounced dead at a hospital in Blountstown, Florida.

Tim Davis, Liberty County athletic director and assistant principal, who attended Friday’s game, told the Daily news from Northwest Florida that Gainer was playing defensive back as a play developed on the other side of the field before he “suddenly went down.”

“The coaches took care of him and called emergency services after a few minutes. When they got to the field, they took him to an ambulance behind the visitors’ bench,” Davis said. “One of our school police officers drove the ambulance to Blountstown while the paramedics took care of him.”

According to ESPN, Gainer scored a 70-yard touchdown early in the game before collapsing. Administrators learned of his death four minutes before the end of the game, Davis said, according to the Northwest Florida Daily newsand decided to finish the game before informing Gainer’s teammates. Davis called the scene “heartbreaking.”

The Florida High School Athletic Association later shared a message on Facebook with the local community, writing that they extend their “deepest condolences to Chance Gainer’s family, the Port St. Joe community and all those affected during this difficult time. We are thinking of you and wish you strength and perseverance.”

Gainer, who had a grade point average above 4.0, recently visited Vanderbilt University, the superintendent told WJHG.

“Chance was not only a star athlete, but a beloved classmate,” GoFundMe organizer Evan Clark wrote of Gainer. “You may not have been able to hear him, but you could see his smile from across the room. A team, a school, a community, and most importantly, a family are truly devastated by the loss of Chance.”

For the coming week, the school district has announced a day off on Monday at Port St. Joe High School, with grief counselors and teachers on-site for students throughout the week. There will also be a day off for students on Tuesday with an open lunch for the football team and teams from neighboring schools. Friday’s football game will be postponed and a tentative celebration of life for Gainer will be held next weekend.

The GoFundMe campaign has raised more than $54,000 of a $60,000 goal as of Sunday, September 8.
