Florence Pugh and Sebastian Stan return to the MCU

Marvel’s Thunderbolts didn’t exactly have the easiest transition from comics to screen.

The film has been teased since 2021 with the release of Black Widow and the introduction of characters Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Red Guardian (David Harbour) and Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), all of whom appear in various versions of the Thunderbolts comics. Further hints were given in the Disney+ series The Falcon and The Winter Soldier. However, with Marvel productions like Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and The Marvels underperforming at the box office and last year’s strike delaying production on Thunderbolts and Captain America: Brave New World, there have been some problems.

Now a first teaser for the star-studded film has finally been revealed.

Thunderbolts was originally supposed to come out around this time in 2023, when Phase 5 of the MCU was announced at Comic-Con 2022. It was also supposed to conclude that phase of the MCU, which was supposed to include Blade and television series like Agatha All Along (then called Agatha: Coven of Chaos) and Daredevil: Born Again. While the current production status of Blade is unknown, Marvel has finally started announcing these new shows, which are set to release this fall and in early 2025.

Steven Yeun (“Beef”) and Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear”) had both originally agreed to star in the film, but were replaced by Lewis Pullman (“Lessons in Chemistry”) and Geraldine Viswanathan (“Drive-Away Dolls”) respectively due to scheduling conflicts.

Thunderbolts is meant to have a certain Dirty Dozen quality, as it revolves around a group of villains sent on missions by the government. Basically Marvel’s version of DC’s The Suicide Squad.

The official synopsis reads: “Thunderbolts follows an irreverent team-up that sees depressed assassin Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) working alongside the MCU’s least expected band of misfits. The film also returns to the screen Marvel Cinematic Universe characters Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), Red Guardian (David Harbour), John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen) and Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), in addition to some exciting new faces.”

“Thunderbolts” is directed by Jake Schreier and produced by Kevin Feige.

Executive producers include Louis D’Esposito, Brian Chapek, Jason Tamez and former MCU regular Scarlett Johansson.

The film’s screenplay was written by Eric Pearson (“Thor: Ragnarok,” “Black Widow”), Lee Sung Jin (“Beef”) and Joanna Calo (“The Bear”).

Marvel’s Thunderbolts is set to be released on May 2, 2025. Check out the teaser below.
