Flooding in Helene knocks out power and water to much of Asheville

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – Catastrophic flooding from Hurricane Helene’s torrential rains wreaked havoc in the mountain town of Asheville, North Carolina, causing mudslides, knocking out power, cell service and clean water supplies, and leaving many residents missing.

Remnants of Helene flooded the state of North Carolina, dropping nearly 30 inches in some places – or about four months of rain in just three days.

Asheville received 14 inches of rain in those three days, setting a new record. The torrential rains caused Swannanoa River levels to rise above their record high in 1791.

NORTH CAROLINA CAUSED BY FLOODING CAUSED BY HELENE

Buncombe County officials said they conducted over 130 water rescues and evacuated more than 600 people from dangerous situations.

However, some people are missing. Four houses were affected by a mudslide and the people in those houses are still missing.

“It’s shocking,” Russell Jones of Asheville told FOX News Multimedia Reporter Chelsea Torres. “It’s one of those things where you don’t expect the river to just be so huge.”

Jones noted that trees had fallen onto homes, cars and streets, but people were out with chainsaws trying to clear the debris.

In the meantime, widespread power outages continue to occur. Cell service is limited to the city hospital’s emergency room, the only public library in the city and only one hotel that is still accessible.

“Outside you see crowds of people just trying to text or make a phone call,” Torres said. “Do everything you can to make sure someone is safe or let someone know they are safe.”

HOW TO WATCH FOX WEATHER

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that there were at least 19 deaths from Helene in North Carolina.
