A tractor-trailer pulling a dump trailer caught fire, causing a two-hour partial closure of a busy intersection in Round Lake Heights.
The Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District responded to a report of a vehicle fire at the intersection of Fairfield Road and Rollins Road in Round Lake Heights at approximately 11:46 a.m. Tuesday.
The driver of a semi-truck called 911 to report a fire in the engine of his truck, which he had stopped in the middle of the intersection.
According to Lt. Shane Page of the Greater Round Lake Fire Protection District, firefighters arrived within two minutes and found the entire cab of the semi-trailer in flames.
The fire department called additional units to the scene to assist in fighting the fire.
The driver of the truck was uninjured and exited the vehicle, which was pulling a dump trailer, before the fire spread, Page said.
Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control within five minutes. Page said a lot of water was needed to put out the fire.
Eastbound traffic out of the intersection and westbound traffic toward the intersection were blocked for approximately two hours because the truck had stopped in the middle of the intersection.
Firefighters remained on scene and conducted cleanup operations until a tow truck was able to recover the semi-trailer at around 1:40 p.m.
Page said it was unclear how the fire started, but fire officials would investigate.
