Five pilots score points in 7-0 win against Stonehill

PORTLAND, Ore. – Elianna Wong and Hailey Still each scored two goals to lead Portland to a 7-0 win over Stonehill College on Sunday in the 2024 Cross and Anchors Classic at Merlo Field at the Clive Charles Soccer Complex. Portland improved its season record to 1-0-1 with the win, while the Skyhawks fell to 0-2-0.

The Cross and Anchors Classic will focus on two institutions run by the Congregation of the Holy Cross. The Pilots defeated Stonehill 4-0 in the inaugural Cross and Anchors Classic in Easton, Massachusetts, last September.
The last time Portland scored seven goals in a game was in a 7-4 win over Saint Mary’s on Oct. 16, 2011. The seven-goal margin was the largest since a 9-0 win over UTSA in the opening round of the 2010 NCAA playoffs.

How it happened

It didn’t take long for the Pilots to set the tone, as Still’s third-minute goal gave the home side an early lead, heading Isabella Yakel’s corner kick firmly into the right post.

Cally Togiai doubled the lead in the 23rd minute with a powerful shot from 25 yards out that hit the left post. It was her second goal in as many games to start the 2024 season.

Portland wowed the crowd with a magnificent goal from a set piece in the 32nd minute when Yakel Wong was released on the left. Her first attempt with her left foot from 25 yards flew just under the bar and gave the Pilots a 3-0 lead at halftime.

Kayla Adams increased the lead to 4-0 in the 60th minute with a diving header after a serve from Hailey Bagby.

Nevertheless, the Washington native scored her second goal of the afternoon in the 61st minute after winning a penalty and beating Stonehill goalkeeper Kelsey Bello.

Bagby got involved in the 65th minute, picking up a loose ball in the goal area and placing it inside the left post.

Wong crowned the goal with an Olympico, beating Bello directly from a corner kick in the 72nd minute.
