Five correctional officers at Massachusetts’ only maximum security prison were injured Wednesday evening, the state Department of Corrections said.

A department spokesman said two correctional officers were stabbed multiple times by inmates around 6:20 p.m. and three other officers were injured while responding to the incident.

All five officers were taken to a nearby hospital, the spokesman said. The facility is secure and an investigation involving the Massachusetts State Police is ongoing, the spokesman said.

The Massachusetts Correction Officers Federated Union first reported the incident on Facebook on Wednesday evening, saying an officer was stabbed in the back and head.

In their post, they criticized the Department of Correction, claiming that it had been four years since the department “authorized the deployment of tactical units and conducted a thorough search of the entire facility.”

“ENOUGH!” the union wrote. “How much more must our members endure before you decide to protect them? The inmates literally run the institution. Do your job.”

Last month, the union informed the Boston-Herald that dozens of “homemade sharpened weapons” were found in Souza-Baranowski’s house.

“Someone is going to get hurt,” Dennis Martin, president of the MCOFU, told the Herald“We live in frightening times now.”

The Department of Correction did not immediately respond to questions about the union’s allegations.
