First weather warning for record heat in parts of Arizona

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — An unusual system of high pressure moving in from the west is bringing unusually high temperatures to Arizona, and we’re currently expecting near- or even record-breaking temperatures all weekend.

If the forecast is correct – and it looks pretty solid – Phoenix is in for the hottest last week of September on record.

These records began in 1895. For this reason, the National Weather Service in Phoenix has issued a heat warning from Wednesday through Sunday evening. All five days are First Alert Weather Days.

Currently it looks like we will reach highs of around 43 degrees on Wednesday and Thursday. On Friday temperatures will slowly rise to 43 degrees and on Saturday we have a chance of reaching 43 degrees.

After that, temperatures will ease somewhat as the ridge moves east and weakens. But almost immediately, another ridge of high pressure will form in Arizona, which will ensure that the weather remains very warm and dry until the first week of October.

In fact, we’re expecting the hottest September ever in Phoenix, and with extreme temperatures forecast, it looks like we’re in for another “hottest month” on record in the Valley of the Sun in 2024.
