FIRST WEATHER WARNING DAY | Strong to severe thunderstorms are possible today

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected today and tonight

A strong weather system is moving into our region, bringing with it a significant threat of strong to severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. This has prompted us to declare a FIRST ALERT WEATHER DAY and urge residents to remain alert and prepared for potentially dangerous conditions.

Primary threats:

  • Harmful winds: Gusts of 60 miles per hour or more are possible, which could down trees and power lines and cause property damage.
  • Large hail: Some storms can produce hailstone-sized rainfall that can damage crops and vehicles.
  • Local flood problems: Heavy rainfall can cause flash floods, especially in low-lying areas and urban centers.
  • Isolated tornado: Even if the chances are not high, an isolated development could still occur.

It continues to rain:

Rain will remain a regular feature in our forecast throughout next week, with showers and thunderstorms developing daily. While this rain is much needed, excessive amounts could increase the risk of flooding.

Tropical influence:

By the end of the week, rains will be associated with the remnants of Helene, which is forecast to become a major hurricane. This tropical system will pump large amounts of moisture into Kentucky, potentially alleviating ongoing rainfall deficits.

Increased flood concerns:

Although beneficial rains are expected, the sheer amount of moisture could be too much of a good thing. Prolonged heavy rain may increase the risk of flooding, especially in areas with saturated soil and swollen waterways.

Preparation is key:

Take the necessary precautions today:

  • Secure garden furniture and loose objects.
  • Charge devices and have backup power sources ready.
  • Plan for possible disruptions to travel and daily activities.
  • Stay informed and follow evacuation instructions if necessary.

Take care of each other!
