First heat warning days come into force

(WSAZ) – Mornings are relatively bearable, with temperatures ranging between 60 and 70 degrees, but temperatures will remain above 90 degrees Fahrenheit all afternoon until sunset. Today is a First Alert Weather Day for this heat, where even low humidity won’t be enough to prevent highs above 95 degrees Fahrenheit. A persistent high pressure system continues to sit over the region, keeping showers away while increasing air stagnation. To make matters worse, ragweed pollen concentrations in the air are nearly at their peak. The point is, there are plenty of reasons to be intentional about your time outdoors today. Don’t stray too far from the air conditioning this afternoon. Even post-sunset temperatures won’t drop too far to 80 degrees Fahrenheit until 10 p.m. or later.

Wednesday will start a little more humid, but temperatures will be between 18 and 21 degrees. Tomorrow afternoon we have a good chance of hitting 38 degrees. Brutal. Later in the afternoon we could finally see a few showers and thunderstorms, but that’s partly due to the heat we’ll have to deal with. That would be mostly in the northern counties late in the day, but it’s a bit of a transition to a new weather pattern.

Thursday and Friday are still heat and humidity warning days, but both days are starting to see better chances for scattered showers or storms to cool things down. A front is finally moving through on Saturday, bringing with it “bittersweet” showers and rumbles. Bittersweet is the right word, because while we desperately need the relief from the heat and water for the turf, it’s the start of the local college football season and the culmination of several festivals in the area. Tailgaters, watch out.

At the end of the Labor Day weekend and into next week, a temperature change to more seasonal temperatures will begin.
