First day of extreme heat warning in Phoenix area; how long will the heat last?

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A heat advisory remains in effect for the Phoenix metropolitan area, Tucson, Pinal County and much of western Arizona, including the Colorado River. The advisory is expected to remain in effect through Friday night.

The high temperature at Phoenix Sky Harbor reached 111 degrees on Wednesday, breaking a record of 55 days with at least 110 degrees. The record was set just last year and will fall on Thursday.

Due to a high pressure system moving in from the west, temperatures are expected to peak nationwide on Thursday and then drop again towards the weekend. However, temperatures will remain well above average until the middle of next week, as today we had 101 consecutive days of temperatures of 38 degrees.

Essentially, the monsoon season for the valley will be over by 2024.

The weather pattern has shifted to westerly winds, signaling a change in the weather towards autumn.

Now all we need is cooler weather and maybe some early fall showers. There’s always a small chance that subtropical moisture from a Pacific storm could make its way into Arizona this month, but the way the Pacific storm pattern is shaping up right now, that’s unlikely.

So when it stops raining at the airport, the monsoon is at 0.74 inches. We end the season with the seventh driest monsoon on record in Phoenix. Those records go back to 1895.
