First day of alert for possible new floods

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – The remnants of former Major Hurricane Helene will continue to linger over central Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley. Spread of further tropical downpours. Some of these will lead to a new wave of flooding!

We have explained a First alert weather day Category until Monday evening. This serves to reduce the possibility of another flood.

There have been reports of flooding since late Sunday afternoon.

At least fourteen reports of flooding in central Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley since late Sunday afternoon into early Monday.

Last night there was persistent flooding in parts of the region. Especially locations near the Blue Ridge Mountains.

If heavy rain falls again in the areas that received the most rain last night, there will be an increased risk of flooding through Monday night!

The National Weather Service has issued a new flood warning for much of the 29News area until at least 11 p.m. Monday. A watch means flooding is possible. A flood warning means that flooding is occurring or is imminent.

The Weather Prediction Center has central Virginia, the Blue Ridge Mountains and the Shenandoah Valley at a level two out of four for excessive rainfall or flash flooding through Monday night.

The chance of rain will decrease on Wednesday. Followed by many dry and seasonal days and nights in early October.

  • Until Monday evening: First alert weather day! There will be showers and new downpours. New flooding possible! Temperatures are consistently in the 60s. Light northeast breeze. Fog areas.
  • Tuesday: Rain showers, drizzle and cloudy with fog. Highs will be in the mid to upper 60s. Lows will be in the upper 50s to lower 60s.
  • Wednesday: Tends to be drier with mostly cloudy skies. Afternoon high temperatures in the low to mid 70s. Lows of 55 to 60 degrees.
  • Thursday: Partly sunny. Highs will be in the mid to upper 70s. Lows will be in the upper 50s to lower 60s.
  • Friday: clouds and sun. Highs in the upper 70s. Lows of 55 to 60 degrees.
  • Saturday: Mostly to partly sunny. Highs in the upper 70s. Lows will be in the upper 40s to lower 50s.
  • Sunday: Mostly sunny. Highs will be in the low to mid 70s. Lows in the 50s.
  • Monday: Increasing cloud cover with a chance of showers in the afternoon. Highs in the lower 70s.
