First concept images of Borderlands 4 revealed at PAX West and give insight into the new worlds

Gearbox Software attended PAX West 2024 to reveal a collection of concept art and new details about the recently announced sequel to the looter shooter Borderlands 4.

Each shot shows off new alien locations for players to explore, but doesn’t give too much away about how the fourth Borderlands game will shake up the formula. If there’s anything to take away from the concept art, it’s that Gearbox wants to give players a variety of areas to loot and shoot in. One image shows a smoky, candle-lit room decorated with glowing blue light, while another shows a small neon town surrounded by snow-capped mountains. You can see some of what Borderlands 4 has to offer in the gallery below.

“The Borderlands universe is super interesting and there’s so much to play with,” said art director Adam May, describing the concept art at PAX West. “It’s a post-apocalyptic world, but in the far future, so it’s like high-tech but lo-fi. It creates all kinds of interesting possibilities for what we can do with technology, our weapons, our characters and the world in general.”

The Gearbox team announced even more at PAX West. First of all Borderlands 4 teaser revealed live at gamescom opening night Now, it was confirmed earlier this month that it will take place seconds after the end of Borderlands 3’s story. With new parts of the universe to explore, the team has taken the opportunity to incorporate technology in ways that haven’t been touched on in the past.

“I can’t say much about it, but that has a lot to do with it here,” May said. “A lot of the things we haven’t been able to experiment with much in the past are high-tech things.”

He went on to hint that the Gearbox team was able to play with more tech and color than ever before, calling Borderlands 4 “the most diverse and beautiful game we’ve ever made.” A release date for Borderlands 4 hasn’t been announced yet, but it’s expected to arrive sometime in 2025 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. Gearbox has more work to do before it can reveal more, so stay tuned in the meantime some of the more popular fan theories that emerged from this first teaser trailer.
