Firefighters extinguish a truck fire on Florida’s Turnpike early this morning

Firefighters from Indian River and St. Lucie counties worked together to extinguish a massive tractor-trailer fire on the Florida Turnpike early Friday morning.

The St. Lucie County Fire District (SLCFD) said crews assisted Indian River County Fire Rescue (IRCFR) at mile marker 178 on the turnpike, which is on the Indian River County border near the Fort Drum Nature Preserve.

Florida 511 issued a fire warning shortly after 1 a.m.

On site, emergency services saw a semi-trailer with an empty trailer in flames. A video shows firefighters fighting the fire while clouds of smoke stretch across the highway.

According to SLCFD, IRCFR joined crews and worked together to bring the vehicle fire under control.

After the fire was successfully extinguished, the scene was turned over to the Indian River Fire Department and the Florida Highway Patrol for further investigation and cleanup. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation and no injuries were reported.
