Firefighters bring 1,500-acre wildfire under control near Ritzville

A 1,500-acre brush fire that broke out west of Ritzville on Tuesday temporarily closed Interstate 90 and State Route 21 before being contained by late afternoon.

According to a news release from the State Fire Marshal’s Office, the fire started in Bauer Coulee near Lind around 11:10 a.m. State fire crews were released late Tuesday afternoon.

Adams County Sheriff Dale Wagner said state emergency crews are expected to arrive Wednesday morning to help fight the fire.

He said firefighters were on the lookout for possible outbreaks throughout the night and into Wednesday. No homes were in danger and no evacuations were in effect Tuesday evening, Wagner said.

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page said the fire destroyed two older, unoccupied buildings. The sheriff’s office said it believes the fire was started by a farmer mowing land under the Conservation Reserve Program.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, the fire marshal’s office said. It said the fire burned sage bushes and wheat.

According to the Washington State Department of Transportation, eastbound I-90 was closed at the intersection with State Route 21 and State Route 21 from southbound I-90 to Franz Road Tuesday afternoon. State Route 21 and I-90 reopened late in the afternoon.

The National Weather Service Spokane issued a wildfire warning for central and eastern Washington on Tuesday due to windy conditions and low humidity.

The Spokane Regional Clean Air Agency reported unhealthy air quality in the Spokane area Tuesday evening due to gusts of wind and dust.
