A fire that broke out Tuesday afternoon near Interstate 10 in Banning had spread to 86 acres in about 90 minutes, according to Cal Fire. As of 4:10 p.m., the agency reported the fire was about 10% contained and that bulldozers and aircraft were being used to fight it.
The agency reported that the fire started when a mobile home caught fire in the 2000 block of Ramsey Street, which runs north alongside the highway, just before 2 p.m. By 2:25 p.m., the fire had spread to 2 acres before growing to the reported size of 86 acres about an hour later.
Traffic monitoring service SigAlert reported at 4:20 p.m. that westbound traffic remained backed up for about 13 miles (21 kilometers) from the fire site near the Ramsey Street exit from Interstate 10 to the Haugen-Lehmann Way exit west of Palm Springs. Stop-and-go traffic was reported to be traveling at speeds of less than 20 mph (32 km/h).
