COEUR d’ALENE – The historic Wolf Lodge Steakhouse in Coeur d’Alene is a “total loss” after a large fire Monday, according to Kootenai County Sheriff Bob Norris.
According to manager Nicole Martel, the fire started in a kitchen hood. The fire quickly spread to the chimney and attic before engulfing the entire building.
The steakhouse was closed at the time, but many employees were on site for a Labor Day picnic.
Shawn Martel, the assistant manager, suffered second-degree burns to his arms and head while trying to put out the fire, according to his relatives. Martel was hospitalized for his injuries.
According to Kootenai County Fire and Rescue Chief Chris Way, the fire also sparked a small forest fire behind the restaurant. The Idaho Department of Lands was called to extinguish the forest fire and establish a fire break.
Several IDL and hand crews are still on site and authorities are asking people to avoid the area. Shoshone and Spokane counties have also been asked for assistance.
The Wolf Lodge Steakhouse has been a Coeur d’Alene landmark for decades. After serving as a general store since 1939, the location became popular as a traditional steakhouse in the 1970s.
