The fire at Jones Barrel Co., 2424 N. 11th St., was reported at 9 a.m., according to an Omaha Fire Department spokesman. The fire was declared under control by 9:40 a.m.

Battalion Chief Coby Werner said the fire was reported as a brush fire. First responders on the scene estimated that over 100 drums were burning and a second alarm was raised because of possible hazardous materials being present.

“We have been working with the owners of Jones Barrel and they have told us that they have mostly food items here on site and very few hazardous materials. However, out of a precautionary measure, we wanted to evacuate north first,” Werner said. “Crews are currently investigating the cause of the fire.”

Werner said it was too early to say if the fire was intentionally set. Investigators were working with the business owner and possible witnesses to determine the cause.

“It actually looked much worse than the fire actually was,” Werner said.
