Filming begins on Dan Trachtenberg’s “Predator” movie — World of Reel

Dan Trachtenberg directed 20th Century’s slick “Prey” spin-off, which is available to stream straight to TV, in 2022. The film made great progress on Hulu, and some people even wondered why it didn’t hit theaters over the summer.

Following the success of “Prey,” 20th Century is moving on to its next “Predator” film. Filming has begun in New Zealand on Trachtenberg’s “Badlands,” in which Elle Fanning plays the lead role. It is intended to be a standalone film within the series.

The plot is being kept secret, but a casting call has leaked online and we have some details about what the story might be about (via AVPGalaxy):

A groundbreaking film where one of the two main storylines explores the complex bond between two very different sisters. Their familial ties are put to the ultimate test as they pursue different paths and missions. We’ve already heard that the story is set sometime in the future.

It’s unknown if 20th Century plans to stream this film exclusively on Hulu again—2022’s Prey broke the streamer’s viewership records. I’d bet they’ll release this film in theaters next summer.

I’m glad Trachtenberg is getting these jobs now. His debut film, 10 Cloverfield Lane, in 2016 was an impressive suspense film – it also featured one of John Goodman’s best performances. You can tell a good filmmaker just by the way a shot is constructed or a scene is composed, and Trachtenberg has it down.

Trachtenberg, who also has “Prey 2” in development, had previously indicated that “Badlands” would hit theaters in 2025. Production on the film is expected to last until November.
