Film review of “It Ends With Us” with Blake Lively

It’s not that. It’s a love drama.

I really wanted to laugh, but this movie is not funny at all. When I went to the screening, a St. Louis nonprofit women’s organization that protects women from physical and emotional abuse was also there. After the film, I spoke to several women. They found the film moving and it made it clear that any man can be abusive regardless of race, religion or social status and that women need to get out of this dangerous situation.

It Ends With Us is an adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s first novel. It tells the gripping story of Lily Blossom Bloom, a woman who comes from an abusive childhood. She moves to Boston to become an entrepreneur, pursuing her lifelong dream of opening a flower shop. A chance encounter with a charming neurosurgeon, Ryle Kincaid, her employee’s brother, sparks an intense relationship as the two fall in love. Lily begins to see sides of Ryle that remind her of her parents’ abusive relationship. When Lily’s first love, Atlas Corrigan, suddenly re-enters her life, her relationship with Ryle is put to the test.

Blake Lively plays Lily Bloom. Justin Baldoni plays Lily’s husband Ryle Kincaid. Jenny Slate plays Allysa, Lily’s employee, best friend, and Ryle’s sister. Hasan Minhaj is Allysa’s husband. Brandon Sklenar is Lily’s first love Atlas Corrigan. Kevin McKidd plays Lily’s father Andrew Bloom.

Blake Lively is captivating. Justin Baldoni’s character is charming until he isn’t. I find the acting interesting and well done. Baldoni also directed the film.

The film is definitely a chick flick and a bit too explicit. I found the film to be a bit long-winded. I would have cut it by about 10 minutes, then I think it would have flowed more smoothly.
