Festival employee arrested for cell phone photos of child abuse

Indecent images of children were found on the cell phone of a festival employee after he offered drugs to a plainclothes security guard.

Adam Bell, 19, was working at a food stall at the In It Together festival in Margam, Neath Port Talbot, in May when he offered an officer ketamine.

Swansea Crown Court heard that packets containing the Class B drug were found in his tent in the staff area of the festival in Margam Park and that police later discovered the indecent images after seizing his phone.

Bell, from Richmond, London, was sentenced to two years and three months in prison on Friday.

Police found 146 images of Category A child abuse – the most serious category – and some of the material had been shared with other people via the Telegram app.

The court heard that Bell had shared a video of the sexual abuse of a Category A child aged between five and seven.

Bell’s phone also contained an “upskirting” video of a young woman.

He pleaded guilty to taking and distributing indecent photographs of children, voyeurism and possession of Class B drugs with intent to resell.

Prosecutor Dean Pulling said messages were found on Bell’s phone describing his “obsession” with child pornography.

Defence lawyer Gerry Mohabir said Bell pleaded guilty at the first opportunity and wanted to understand his own behaviour.

Judge Geraint Walters told the court that Bell’s conviction had “tormented” him.

“I cannot understand at all how you, who were a person of good character for most of your teenage life, could become a person who committed such a list of crimes,” the judge said.

He added that Bell had “significantly breached his duty” at the In It Together Festival, an annual event attended by teenagers.

After the conviction, Jonathan Pritchard, prosecuting, said: “There was compelling evidence that Bell intended to use the festival to traffic illegal drugs. In addition, his mobile phone showed that he had downloaded and shared indecent images of children.”
