Tottenham Hotspur continued their quest for perfection in the reformatted Europa League, claiming a 2-1 win over Ferencváros in Budapest on Thursday.

Wet, rainy nights in Europe are, in a way, endearing. It’s fun to think about how teams have to tactically deal with difficult passing and pushing situations that throw chunks of grass into their shoes.

This is fun when the team you support isn’t playing. Tottenham Hotspur traveled to Budapest for the first time in conditions that forced the team to take more time than usual to dominate the flow of the game.

Four teenagers in the starting XI – Mikey Moore, Will Lankshear, Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray – all had moments in the game, with Moore and Gray playing all 90 minutes for Spurs.

After a tough 20 minutes of play in which Ferencváros tried to get things going in front of the home fans – with a goal from a cross and a goal ruled offside thanks to VAR – Spurs finally found their rhythm.

The Spurs woke up and realized the moment they had to strike, while the home side were annoyed at the chances they were wasting on the other half of the pitch.

Moore fired a pass into the box for Lankshear, who couldn’t quite control the pass. With a defender on his back and a slight hit from the ball, Bergvall easily got into the path of Pape Sarr. When Sarr saw the defender in front of him turn his back to the ball – he appeared to lose possession in the confusion in the penalty area – he fired his first shot at the far post in the 23rd minute, giving the team a 1-0 lead in the lead.

Despite Ferencváro’s moments where the Hungarian side should have put the ball into the net, Spurs sealed victory thanks to the red-hot form of Brennan Johnson.

Coming on as a substitute in the 65th minute, Johnson made his presence felt with a shot that hit the crossbar and took advantage of his second goal.

Moore again led the movement when he found James Maddison, who turned and passed a powerful ball to Johnson. Johnson took a touch with his right foot and controlled things, firing a shot around two Ferencváros to the far post and into the net.

Ferencváros equalized shortly before extra time with a cross and the first goal. This had to happen for the Hungarian team because they had a chance and a few more chances.

Spurs tried to win the game in the final five minutes to stay perfect in the Europa League with a 2-1 win.

Notes:

• Mikey Moore and Will Lankshear seem to be in Ange’s plans for the future. Great passing game from Lankshear and unlucky not to score with the chances he had. Moore was involved in setting up both of the team’s goals and played well on both wings.
• Gray did great at left-back and held his own. There were moments when his tired legs allowed Ferencváros to break down, but he came back and got some good tackles
• Johnson is burning. You don’t need social media to prove you’re worth the money Spurs spent on you
• Yvess Bissouma played well after a shaky first few minutes. His ability to make tough tackles and help the team out of the press worked wonders today.
• They now have six points and have won five games in a row in all competitions.
