FCC warns of back-to-school scams targeting college students

The Federal Communications Commission is warning college students about back-to-school scams.

According to the FCC, these scams may be harder to detect because they resemble legitimate fundraisers whose goal is truly to help students and parents.

According to the North Carolina Better Business Bureau, the most common scams targeting students are scholarship, technical support, and roommate and rental scams.

In addition to cold calls and robocalls, campus scammers also send “fraudulent emails and text messages that appear official,” according to the FCC, including fake scholarship offers.

The FCC stressed that students are not required to make their loan payments over the phone.

“Never give out personal information over the phone, including social security numbers, bank account and routing numbers, and credit and debit card numbers,” the FCC said.

All credit information should be kept confidential and secure, the FCC said, adding that scammers often target students with loans.

Financial records and account information should be closely monitored.

The FCC also warned that such scams targeting students do not only occur at the beginning of the school year.
