FC Barcelona reaches agreement with Nico Williams

FC Barcelona has reached an agreement with its main transfer target, 2024 European Championship winner Nico Williams. SPORTwhich cited anonymous sources.

Nico was already President Joan Laporta’s most coveted potential signing before he scored the first goal in the 2-1 victory in the European Championship final between Spain and England.

During the last edition of the UEFA tournament, he terrorised the defences of elite countries such as Croatia, Italy, Germany and France from the left wing, while his close friend and Barça prodigy Lamine Yamal did the same on the other flank.

Almost a month has passed since La Roja became kings of the continent for the fourth time – a record – and yet the Blaugrana have so far failed to lure Nico from Athletic Club to Catalonia.

However, the club has also found success elsewhere in the market by signing Spanish teammate and Euro 2016 top scorer Dani Olmo, who signed a six-year contract with his youth team on Friday. The deal is worth $60 million (€55 million) in fixed deposits plus a further $7.6 million (€7 million) in add-ons, according to transfer market expert Fabrizio Romano.

Just a few days after this transfer was confirmed, SPORT reports that Nico, or at least he, is making progress directly.

Anonymous Barca sources told the Catalan newspaper that Nico had told us that he “wants to come this summer” and that the possible move should take place next week.

Just as he did earlier this week in Leipzig with Olmo and his camp, sporting director Deco was able to “seduce” Nico and agent Felix Tainta during a meeting in Zaragoza.

The biggest sticking point, however, is raising the funds for Nico’s release clause from his Basque employer, which is said to amount to around 67.7 million dollars (62 million euros).

Nico’s arrival will complicate matters for Olmo, who was seen by some as a hot candidate for the left wing position that remains vacant after Ferran Torres and Joao Felix were left without a place under Hansi Flick’s predecessor Xavi Hernandez last season.

Instead, Olmo could compete with players like Pedri and Gavi – both of whom are currently injured – for the attacking midfield positions in Flick’s 4-2-3-1.
