UPDATE August 14, 7:51 p.m.: The Minnesota State Patrol has updated the accident report to include the fatalities. No further details were released. According to Minnesota 511, the road appears to have reopened.

According to 511MN, a section of Highway 2 was closed for several hours as emergency crews searched for an accident.

The accident occurred in Arrowhead Township south of Floodwood, near Nelson Road. The Minnesota State Patrol said it happened near a construction site shortly before 3 p.m.

Five vehicles were involved, the first four – a GMC, a Ford, a Mack Semi and a Honda – were in traffic due to construction. The International Semi crashed into the stationary vehicles at highway speeds. Officials have not yet released any information on the extent of the injuries.

Drivers will be detoured. The detour will take vehicles via Nygaard Road and Paupores Road east of Gowan.

The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, Arrowhead Response & Fire Department, Floodwood Ambulance, Police & Fire Department, St. Louis County Rescue, Cloquet Ambulance and Life Link EMS assisted.
