Family speaks out after fatal hit-and-run accident in Mitchell County

PELHAM, Ga. (WALB) – The Mitchell County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) is still searching for the vehicle and driver involved in a fatal hit-and-run crash in Pelham Friday night.

MCSO lead investigator Jacob Pollock calls it an “unusual accident” because the hit-and-run incident occurred on a country road with an incline.

He told WALB that the driver was traveling east at the time of the incident, but turned around and headed west again after the fatal collision with 88-year-old Amos Anderson.

At the time of the accident, Anderson was cleaning his yard and surrounding areas. According to Pollock, a neighbor called the police because she heard loud screeching tires.

When police arrived at the scene around 6:40 a.m., they saw Anderson’s body in a ditch on the south side of the road and skid marks along the road.

Police went door to door looking for surveillance footage but were unsuccessful. There are currently no witnesses. The make and model of the vehicle involved is still unknown.

“We don’t know what happened and until we talk to someone or someone comes forward, we won’t know what happened until GSP does further investigation. We just want you to come forward to help yourself and help the family get the closure they need,” Pollock said.

Anderson’s body will be taken to Macon for an autopsy on Monday morning.

Currently, the family has no funeral plans as they await the autopsy results.

The family is currently accepting donations through the funeral home’s website. Click here to make a donation.

According to investigators, it is currently unclear whether Anderson was killed in the impact.
