False report of school shooting in central Pennsylvania leads to early school closure

News outlets reported that false reports of an active shooter caused students to leave the Lancaster County Career & Technology Center early Thursday morning.

According to multiple news reports, school officials cordoned off the campus after West Lampeter Township police said they received a call about a shooting at the school before 9:30 a.m.

At 10:42 a.m., school officials sent a message to parents saying the threat was unconfirmed and that all career counseling centers would close early out of an abundance of caution, police said.

According to police, the students were eventually released and taken to Willow Street Mennonite Church, where they were reunited with their families. Students from Brownstown were taken back to their home school for the day.

According to a message on the Lancaster County CTC website, campuses will remain closed for the remainder of Thursday.

According to news reports, the CTC will reopen on Friday.

According to police, preliminary investigations revealed that the incident “was sparked by a very general, vague threat that has been circulating on social media sites over the past few weeks. Additionally, it was determined that the original call was made outside of school by a relative of a student. At this time, police do not believe the caller had malicious intent, just general concern for the welfare of students at the school.”

Lancaster County CTC is a vocational school with multiple locations, including Willow Street, Mount Joy and Ephrata. Each location offers 20 majors ranging from nursing and culinary arts to electromechanical engineering.
