Fallen trees and huge hail in storms with tornado warning in Ontario

The threat of severe thunderstorms extended across much of southern Ontario and Quebec on Wednesday as a mushy tropical air mass added to unstable conditions.

By 2 p.m. ET, the first tornado warnings were in effect for parts of Ontario’s vacation home area, including the cities of Orillia, Bracebridge and Gravenhurst. Additional tornado warnings and severe weather warnings remained in effect throughout the evening and night in the region.

The severe weather warning for Wednesday included damaging winds, heavy rain, frequent lightning and large hail. Three-inch hail was reported in areas from Talbot to Coboconk, Ontario.

Power outages and downed trees were also reported during the stormy weather conditions. Most of the outages affected customers north of Barrie and Orillia. More than 30,000 people were left in the dark before dinnertime, and the outages continued into the night.

This was the third consecutive day of impending storm threats, with the region’s worst conditions looming on Wednesday as a cold front and low pressure system cut through the hot and humid air mass that had built up over the past five days.

There will still be a risk of thunderstorms in parts of Quebec on Thursday as the storm system moves east, so be sure to pay attention to the weather and stay informed of any watches and warnings in your area.
