Fall 2024 film list: Moana 2, Beetlejuice and more | History

Many familiar characters back on screen

The colder weather is coming and you know what that means.

It’s time to stay indoors, cozy up with your favorite snacks, and yes – time for movies, movies and more movies.

Whether you prefer to stream at home or enjoy the full cinema experience, there are plenty of new releases to choose from this fall.

We’ve compiled some of the most anticipated films of the next few months to give you a preview.

So put your feet up, turn off your devices (pssst!) and look around.

1. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice – September 6th

If you’ve never seen the 1988 film, here’s what you should know about Beetlejuice: He’s a crazy guy—with an even crazier haircut—who has a knack for ridding haunted houses of undesirables.

The cult figure makes a spooky return to the screen with Beetlejuice. Beetlejuice is summoned again after someone accidentally opens a portal to the afterlife. The film is rated for ages 13 and up.

2. Transformers One – September 20th

I know, I know. Aren’t there already six Transformers movies?

Yes, there is. But the new film, Transformers One, takes its title from the fact that it’s an origin story, meaning it’s set in the past and shows how certain characters came to be.

The film will apparently explore the origins of Optimus Prime and Megatron and how they changed their home planet forever. It is rated PG.

3. Wicked – November 22nd

Musical lovers, your time has finally come.

Twenty-one long years after its breakthrough on Broadway, “Wicked” makes its cinematic debut with two of the world’s best singers – Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo – in the lead roles.

Will the film defy gravity? Only time will tell.

4. Moana 2 – November 27

If you’ve never seen the 2016 movie Moana, you might live on a deserted island – perhaps in Polynesia?

The second part of the film series, originally planned as a television series, is set to hit the big screen this autumn.

In the film, Moana travels across the distant seas of Oceania to follow the call of her ancestors in a terrible way.

5. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 – December 20th

It took a nimble animal to squeeze it onto this movie list on the very last day of fall.

The speedy blue hedgehog, originally created as a character on the retro Sega Genesis console, is back.

In the new movie, Sonic and his best buddy Tails try to stop Dr. Robotnik from launching something called a Death Egg. What is a Death Egg? You’ll have to watch it to find out.

6. Mufasa: The Lion King – December 20

The new Lion King movie, Mufasa: The Lion King, hits theaters on the same day as Sonic, if you fancy a double feature.

The new film is both a prequel and a sequel to the original 1994 animated version of The Lion King and its 2019 remake.

7. Get permission to make the selection: Joker: Folie à Deux and Venom: The Last Dance

Two of the biggest new releases this fall have more explicit content, so if you want to watch them, you’ll need to get your parents’ permission first.

The Joker is back in a new movie on October 4th, and this time he’s ready to… jam?

In “Joker: Folie à Deux” (rated R), Arthur Fleck falls in love with his music therapist Harley Quinn (played by Lady Gaga) as they explore musical madness together.

Also in the superhero style is “Venom: The Last Dance,” which is released on October 25. The age rating is still pending, but it may receive an R rating.

The third and final installment in this Marvel series follows Venom and Eddie Brock on a journey while being pursued by a mysterious military man.
