Fairfax County husband charged in Reston double murder that led to au pair’s arrest

A Fairfax County husband was charged Monday with murdering his wife and another man in a double homicide case that rocked a Reston community in February 2023, county officials announced during a news conference.

On February 24, 2023, officers were called to a home near the Hattontown neighborhood in the 13200 block of Stable Brook Way. Upon arrival, officers found Joseph Ryan, 39, of Springfield, with gunshot wounds to the upper torso and a woman, Christine Banfield, 37, of Herndon, in an upstairs bedroom with stab wounds to the upper torso.

Authorities later charged Juliana Peres Magalhaes, 23, of Reston, the family’s au pair, with second-degree murder in Ryan’s death. Peres Magalhaes is being held without bail in an adult jail while she awaits her upcoming trial.

Police said they seized two firearms and a knife during the incident.

On Monday, District Attorney Steve Descano said Brendan Banfield, Christine’s husband, was arrested and charged with aggravated murder. The arrest came 570 days after the double murder, according to Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis.

According to testimony from Chief Davis, Brendan and the family’s au pair, Juliana was in a romantic relationship at the time of the murders.

“I will not describe the relationship of our victim, Joseph Ryan, to the individuals involved in the case at this time as the investigation is ongoing,” said Police Chief Davis.

Although the boss did not go into detail, WTOP reports, according to court documents, that Ryan met Christine through an adult fetish website that someone had created on her laptop.

7News learned that Brendan worked as a criminal investigation agent for the IRS and is accused of shooting Ryan with his service weapon.

“I knew, I suspected, I had a feeling that there was a lot more to what was seen that morning,” Chief Davis said.

“Probably not a day has gone by that I haven’t thought about the victims in this case,” the chief added.

According to Descano, the police investigation led to new information that he said was “crucial” to the charges. To protect the ongoing trial, officials did not provide further details.

According to police, officials said the first emergency calls were made by Peres Magalhaes and Christine Banfield’s husband.

After an investigation, investigators determined that Peres Magalhaes shot Ryan and that Ryan and Banfield knew each other. Officials said it was unclear whether Ryan stabbed Christine Banfield.

There was no official statement as to whether the new information would change the above schedule.

At that time, Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis stated that there had been no break-in.

According to police, a four-year-old child was also found unharmed in the house.

After their initial investigation, detectives said Christine’s husband Brendan was outside the house at the time of the incident.

During Monday’s press conference, officials made it clear that Perez’s trial will continue as scheduled.

“The fact that we have filed charges against Brendan today and made this arrest does not mean that her case will be dismissed,” Descano said. “We intend to proceed with the case as planned.”

“We know there is still a lot of work ahead of us, but I can tell you that this case has been on my mind for a long time. I know the chief and my prosecutor have been thinking about it since the day it happened,” Descano added.

Brendan is expected to appear in court in the next few days, with a trial date to be set soon thereafter.

The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
