Experienced DE called Bills’ “not-so-secret weapon” after hot start to 2024 season

After a disappointing 2023 season, the NFL’s active sack leader is back among the league’s best as the new season begins. Buffalo Bills pass rusher Von Miller has looked like his old self through the first two weeks of the new season. NFL.com analyst Bucky Brooks wrote about Miller’s reemergence in a recent article for the site, calling the defender the team’s “not-so-secret weapon” before writing that his film matches the game report.

“Miller is the unit’s undisputed leader, but he’s not just a veteran,” Brooks wrote. “The film shows a playmaker who still has the athleticism and technical ability to win in a variety of offenses. He clearly understands when to use his tools and why they are effective against certain pass sets. He effectively sets the table with maneuvers to keep blockers guessing before the snap, then goes for his signature moves.

“The veteran is a nightmare in these situations due to his skills, experience and expertise. must-have Moments when everything is at stake.”

Miller was impressive through two games, collecting two sacks and four total tackles. He recorded his first sack in nearly two calendar years in Week 1 before recording another in Week 2, showing a level of performance and skill he hasn’t shown since tearing his ACL in 2022.

The future Hall of Famer had double-digit sack seasons in seven of his first eight seasons with the Denver Broncos, a feat he hasn’t accomplished since 2018 but is on pace to accomplish again. Miller has eight Pro Bowl nominations and two Super Bowl rings to his name; he was even named MVP of Super Bowl 50.

Buffalo’s defense has benefited from Miller’s experience early in the season, as the 35-year-old has silenced any doubters from last season. Also helping is the presence of Greg Rousseau, AJ Epenesa and Ed Oliver, who have contributed to the solid play of the Bills’ defensive front so far. Brooks believes all of the defensive linemen complement each other to form a deadly combination.

“With Gregory Rousseau and Ed Oliver gaining momentum as disruptive pass rushers, the Bills suddenly have a dominant defensive front that has the potential to take over the game,” Brooks wrote. “Whether it’s Miller running around at the end to pressure quarterbacks with his trademark speed rush or Oliver and Rousseau gaining the upper hand with a series of power moves, Buffalo can create chaos at the line of scrimmage.”

Rousseau, Oliver and Mille have combined for all six of the Bills’ sacks this season. Along with Epenesa, the four are responsible for seven of the Bills’ 10 quarterback hits. Miller has had a great start to the year; he will look to continue his dominance in Buffalo’s game against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 3.
