Expected Real Madrid line-up against Lille: Will Mbappé play?

Real Madrid face Lille in the first away game of their Champions League title defense and have major injury concerns.

Injuries continue to plague Real Madrid ahead of their second Champions League game. Just as Jude Bellingham, Aurélien Tchouaméni and Eduardo Camavinga returned from the sidelines, Kylian Mbappé and Thibaut Courtois suffered injuries. The Frenchman appears to have recovered from a thigh injury and has returned to training. He was Flying shown to this game, so seems to be in the running. But Courtois is definitely out due to an abductor injury in his left leg.

Now Carlo Ancelotti has to compensate for the fact that his starting goalkeeper will be out against Lille and his main striker will probably only be able to play a minor role. However, the midfield could get a boost if coach Camavinga agrees. The 21-year-old was due to make his first appearance of the season in the Madrid derby, but Ancelotti opted to keep Camavinga on the bench in the controversial 1-1 draw. The coach also revealed that Mbappé could take part in the game if he is fully fit again on Wednesday.

This is what Real Madrid’s team could look like against Lille on October 2nd.

TW: Andriy Lunin–Lunin makes his first start for Los Blancos this season while Courtois recovers from injury.

RB: Dani Carvajal–The right-back has had a slow start offensively this season and will look to be more involved in the attack on Wednesday.

CB: Eder Militão–The defender scored against Atlético Madrid at the weekend and will be a target from set pieces against a Lille side that has conceded 11 goals in six games.

CB: Antonio Rüdiger–The Germany international will have to do his best to help his new goalkeeper keep Jonathan David and Lille off the scoresheet.

LB: Ferland Mendy–Mendy will have the difficult task of arresting Edon Zhegrova. The winger has scored three goals in his last five games.

RM: Federico Valverde–Real Madrid’s unsung hero, Valverde is Ancelotti’s most versatile midfielder. His precise passing and defensive work rate are two of the many reasons why the Uruguayan has started every game this season. However, if the coach wants to give anyone a break, it’s Valverde.

CM: Aurélien Tchouaméni–Tchouaméni is the last line of defense in front of Los Blancos’ defensive line. His tackles and interceptions are crucial when it comes to stifling teams in transition.

CM: Eduardo Camavinga–The Frenchman could make his first appearance in the 2024-25 season. Camavinga did not play against Atlético Madrid after recovering from a knee injury.

LM: Jude Bellingham– The midfielder needs to link up better with Vinícius Jr. and Rodrygo when Mbappé is not in the starting lineup.

ST: Vinícius Júnior– The Brazilian can take advantage of Lille’s weak defense to gain a foothold in the Champions League. Across all competitions, Vinícius Jr. has only scored three goals in ten games.

ST: Rodrygo–The 23-year-old will be looking to bounce back after a quiet, ineffective game in the Madrid derby. Like Vinícius Jr., Rodrygo has only scored three goals this season.
