Expected pitchers and starting lineups for the St. Louis Cardinals vs. the Mariners, September 6

The St. Louis Cardinals (71-69) have been playing good baseball lately and now face the Seattle Mariners (71-70) in hopes of a miraculous place in the playoffs in the final stretch.

While there was big news today about the future of the Cardinals’ front office, the club is still in “win now” mode despite their playoff chances being below 2% with time running out. St. Louis has been playing well lately, but the problem is that they are out of control of their own destiny and the teams above them in the standings are playing just as well or better than the Cardinals.

Another loss in a series, or especially a loss this weekend, could end their chances of making the postseason, but right now the Cardinals need to win every day.

Probable starting pitchers

  • Eric Fedde (8-8, 3.43 ERA) gets the ball for the Cardinals to start tonight’s game, and two of his last three starts with St. Louis have been more than what they expected from him. His last outing in New York went poorly (4 ER in 5.1 IP), but his starts in Minnesota (1 ER in 6.0 IP) and against Milwaukee (2 ER in 5.2 IP) gave fans hope that Fedde can be that quality starter in the middle of the rotation next season.
  • Bryce Miller (10-8, 3.30 ERA) is one of the most dynamic and exciting young pitchers in the game today on a Mariners team that has arguably the best young pitchers in baseball. Miller has been particularly good lately, posting a 2.97 ERA in his last seven starts. The Cardinals offense will have its hands full today with Miller and the Seattle bullpen.
