Season 12 of The Masked Singer aired Wednesday night on FOX, and five brand new, secret celebrities competed for the Golden Mask Trophy. After the studio audience voted, Leaf Sheep was the first to remove his mask, revealing the two-time Super Bowl winner John Elway. Watch our video interview above.

“At this stage in my life, I think it would be good for me to get out of my comfort zone,” says the 64-year-old Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee. “Plus, I have 10 grandchildren, so I thought they would think it was pretty cool to see Poppy on ‘The Masked Singer.’ Even though I got voted out, that’s OK, it was a great experience for me.”

This year, The Masked Singer introduced Masked Singer ambassadors, former contestants who have a special relationship with this season’s talent. For Elway, it was the koala from season 11, DeMarcus Ware. In Elway’s video package, Ware refers to Leaf Sheep as “the GOAT,” the leading panelist Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg to proclaim: “There is only one GOAT” and to assume that Leaf Sheep Tom Brady.

“He’s probably the GOAT when you look at his history and his accomplishments,” Elway responds with a chuckle. “We quarterbacks all take pride in the way we play and always thought we were the best, but at the end of the day, everyone has a different opinion on who the GOAT is. So I wasn’t at all offended when she said Tom Brady, it was actually a compliment.”

Ken Jeong correctly guessed Blatt Schaf was Elway, but Robin Thicke thought he was Troy Aikman And Rita Ora was completely on the wrong track with her Billy Bob Thornton choose.

As Leaf Sheep, Elway sang “I Like It, I Love It” by Tim McGraw“I’m a country fan, that’s probably what I listen to 90 percent of the time,” he reveals. “Maybe some ’80s stuff, but I’m a country western fan. I’m also a Tim McGraw fan, so when they suggested that song, I was excited. It was a relatively easy song to sing. It didn’t have a lot of different octaves, which was good. Tim has a lot more than I do, but it felt like that was the easiest song for me to sing.”

Elway continues to talk about his five Super Bowl appearances and how it felt to lose three games in a row before winning two in a row. He also talks about his personal football hero, Roger Staubach.
