Evacuations ordered near Stanley as wildfire spreads. Closure of Idaho Highway 21 extended

STANLEY (Idaho Statesman) — Custer County Sheriff Ethan Kelly issued evacuation orders for residents of Stanley Lake on Friday and urged others living nearby, including in the town of Stanley, to prepare to leave the area as the dangerous Wapiti Fire has expanded to more than 35,000 acres.

Kelly’s office said residents closest to the fire should evacuate immediately. The Facebook page said those residents were on “GO” status, which a separate photo of a poster described as indicating “extreme danger in the area.”

“Leave immediately,” the sign said. “It is not safe to remain there and it puts you, your family and the emergency responders at risk. If you remain, emergency responders may not be able to help you.”

The orders came as the Wapiti Fire, which started in the Boise National Forest, continued to rage and spread into parts of the Sawtooth Mountains. It was only 10% contained as of Friday morning. Idaho Highway 21 was now closed from Stanley to Lowman, the sheriff’s office said.

On Tuesday, the sheriff’s office announced the closure of the Stanley Lake recreation complex after the fire jumped the crest of the Sawtooth Mountains and took hold in the Elk Creek and Stanley Lake Creek drainage areas, the Idaho Statesman previously reported.

The Wapiti Fire, sparked by a lightning strike near Grandjean in late July, forced the closure of the historic Sawtooth Lodge, which lost three buildings and has been closed for three weeks with “no reopening in sight,” according to a GoFundMe campaign launched for the lodge.

“The house and cabins are in danger, but they are still standing,” the GoFundMe campaign states. “Anyone who has ever been to Grandjean knows what is at stake.”
