Evacuations for Zone 1 near Stanley are still underway – LocalNews8.com

STANLEY, Idaho (KIFI) – Evacuations remain in effect for people living near the Wapiti Fire near Stanley.

The Custer County Sheriff’s Office said Zone 1 is in “Go” status, Zone 2 is in “Set” status and Zone 3 is in “Ready” status.

The American Red Cross has set up an evacuation center for those affected by the fire. It is located at the Stanley Community Center at 510 Eva Falls Avenue. The Red Cross is also prepared to open an emergency shelter in Challis if needed.

Because of the fire, State Highway 21 is closed from east of Lowman to Stanley.

The fire, caused by lightning, has spread to 68,124 acres.

According to fire officials, the fire “has barely moved over the weekend.” Firefighters continue to use bulldozers, hand pipes, compressed air and hoses to surround buildings in residential areas near Stanley and along Highway 21 toward Lowman.

It is contained to zero percent.

A community meeting will be held at the Lowman Fire Station on Tuesday evening, August 27th at 6 p.m.
