Eugene Stormwater and Urban Forestry teams share best practices for summer tree care

The City of Eugene’s Stormwater Management Education Program and Urban Forestry Team have created a resource for community members to help them care for the trees on their property as we move through what is traditionally the peak of summer heat.

Check out the How to Water Your Trees resource to learn all about best practices for keeping both private and public trees healthy and happy during the warmer months. Other helpful topics include:

  • How to water your tree according to its age
  • How to make a watering bucket
  • Where should the water be directed so that the tree roots can benefit as much as possible?
  • How NOT to water your trees
  • Effective cutting and fertilization

“Trees are very important to everyone in Eugene, and not just for their beauty and shade. They are critical to the quality of life in our area; they help combat climate problems; and they provide an important filtering function for stormwater that would otherwise flow untreated into our waterways,” says Kathy Eva, director of the Stormwater Education program.

The “How to Water Your Trees” brochure is available on the city’s stormwater education website and, according to the city, provides a good starting point to learn more about stormwater, natural filtration and the city’s water infrastructure.
