ESPN Weigh-In Results: Munguia vs. Bazinyan

Jaime Munguia (43-1, 34 KOs) and Erik Bazinyan (32-0-1, 23 KOs) successfully made weight Thursday at their weigh-in for Friday’s 12-round main event, live on ESPN from Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona.

Former WBO junior middleweight Munguia recently joined Top Rank and they hope to make him a star. Munguia, 27, suffered his first career loss last May when he lost to Canelo Alvarez. It was a decisive win for Canelo, but still contested.

Munguia needs to win this fight against the undefeated Bazinyan and look good doing it, because if he loses it will be a sign that he is not destined to be a world champion in the 168 class.

Friday’s event will be broadcast live on ESPN and ESPN+ starting at 10:30 p.m. ET/7:30 p.m. PT.

In Friday’s co-main event, 2020 Olympic heavyweight silver medalist Richard Torrez Jr. (10-0, 10 KOs) weighed in at 232.6 pounds, while his opponent Joey Dawejko (28-11-4, 16 KOs) weighed in at 244.1 pounds for their eight-round bout. Torrez Jr., a small heavyweight at 6-foot-2, will look to continue his perfect KO streak.

“I think now we’re going to find out who Jaime Munguia is. Is he a guy from Mexico who had a great record and was able to parlay that into a fight against Canelo, or can he be a multi-weight champion? I think based on his style, yes,” Mark Kriegel told Top Rank Boxing.

This is not the fight that will show what kind of fighter Munguis is, because Bazinyan is not a talented super middleweight. The fights that will show if Munguis is a candidate for Top Rank are those against Osleys Inglesias, Christian Mbilli, Caleb Plant and Edgar Berlanga.

“Has putting Canelo at a distance improved his game? If so, is that confidence boost a technique boost?” Kriegel said. “Now we’re finding out. The ingredients for an action fight are there, but Bazinyan has just as much to prove, if not more, than Munguia.

“How good is he really? We don’t know exactly,” said Kriegel.

“Erik Bazinyan is an offensive, aggressive fighter and that’s what makes this fight so exciting because both are great offensive fighters, but neither of them is great defensively. So it’s going to be a gun battle,” said Bernardo Osuna.
