ESPN FPI draws a disappointing outlook for 2024

In 10 days, the Virginia Tech football team will begin its 2024 season. Expectations are high in Blacksburg this season as the Hokies retain many players from their 2023 team and make some key transfers on both sides of the ball. Fans are heading into the season with big plans.

ESPN FPI isn’t as high on the Hokies as everyone else. In fact, they’re expecting six wins for Virginia Tech, but that’s about as good as it gets. ESPN is giving Tech a 69.1 percent chance of reaching six wins, and if that’s what it comes down to, it would be a disappointing season to say the least. Let’s take a look at ESPN’s win prediction and see what they think of their schedule and how they might fare.

ESPN doesn’t see the Hokies as clear favorites in any game. Here are five games where ESPN gives them a 60% or better chance of winning this season.

September 14: at Old Dominion – Probability of winning for Virginia Tech: 75.0%
September 7: against Marshall – Probability of winning for Virginia Tech: 74.6%
November 30: against Virginia – Probability of winning for Virginia Tech: 66.9%
October 17: against Boston College – Probability of winning for Virginia Tech: 63.0%
October 26: against Georgia Tech – Probability of winning for Virginia Tech: 60.1%

ESPN gives the Hokies a better than 50% chance of winning two games.

August 31: at Vanderbilt – Probability of winning for Virginia Tech: 57.7%
November 2: in Syracuse – Probability of winning for Virginia Tech: 55.5%

ESPN gives Virginia Tech less than a 50% chance of winning the remaining five games.

September 21: against Rutgers – Probability of winning for Virginia Tech: 48.9%
November 23: at Duke – Probability of winning for Virginia Tech: 48.4%
October 5: in Stanford – Probability of winning for Virginia Tech: 44.4%
November 9: against Clemson – Probability of winning for Virginia Tech: 31.0%
27 September: in Miami – Probability of winning for Virginia Tech: 27.5%

Based on these projections, the Hokies will finish with seven wins, and that’s a little low. Eight to nine wins is much more likely, and a 7-5 finish would be a disappointing result in many people’s eyes. Of course, head coach Brent Pry is looking for much more than seven wins, and it’s important to remember that these win projections change every week. Football season has begun.
