There have been four meetings between Tennessee and Oklahoma football teams. The last two meetings took place in the 2014 and 2015 seasons as home and away games.

The Vols and Sooners will face each other for the fifth time on Saturday, but this time it will mean a little more.

The two teams are now SEC rivals, so the meeting in Norman will be a conference game. It is a highly anticipated contest, which is why ESPN’s College Game Day will air live from the Sooners campus on Saturday morning (9 a.m.-12 p.m. ET).

It will be the first time that College Game Day has been in the city since November 21, 2020.

Preview Tennessee-Oklahoma

In the sporadic meetings between these two teams, Oklahoma has usually come out on top. The Sooners have won their last three meetings against the Vols, in 1968, 2014 and 2015.

The only time Tennessee beat Oklahoma was in 1939.

However, anything can happen on Saturday when the Vols (sixth-ranked) enter hostile territory to face the Sooners (15th-ranked). Both teams are off to a 3-0 start, but neither has faced such a challenge before.

Oklahoma played its first three games at home, defeating Temple, Houston and Tulane.

Meanwhile, Tennessee has dominated Chattanooga, NC State and Kent State. The Vols have outscored their opponents 191-13.

It would be quite a statement if Oklahoma (playing the first SEC game in school history) were to defeat Tennessee in its conference debut.

“This is huge,” Sooners coach Brent Venables told reporters. “I mean, this is a historic moment for this university and certainly for the football program and all the athletic programs here at the university. So to be a part of this is really special.”

Tennessee’s defense has yet to allow a touchdown this season, so it will be a tough task for Oklahoma’s offense, led by sophomore quarterback Jackson Arnold (484 yards, seven touchdowns and two interceptions).

However, the Sooners will be the best team the Vols have played so far, so expect an exciting game between these new conference rivals.

It can go either way, but the prediction here is for Oklahoma to pull out a win and make a strong first impression in its SEC debut. But don’t be surprised if it comes down to the last minute.
