Pep Guardiola admitted that he did not know if Erling Haaland would play for Manchester City against Brentford following the death of his father’s best friend.

The City striker paid a touching tribute to “Uncle” Ivar Eggja, who died on Wednesday at the age of 59.

Haaland paid a touching tribute to the late Eggja, posting a series of photos of him with him as well as Haaland’s father, former City and Leeds player Alfe-Inge Haaland.

On Instagram he said: “You are a legend, Ivar.

“Words cannot describe how much you meant to me! Words cannot describe how much we will miss you!

“I don’t give a shit. I don’t give a shit! That’s exactly what I’m going to do.”

“Thanks for everything, you crazy man. We’ll see each other again.”

“Rest in peace, Ivar.”

Eggja’s death calls into question Haaland’s fitness for City’s game on Saturday (live on talkSPORT 2).

Guardiola gave an update in his pre-match press conference, saying: “A difficult moment for him and his family. Sad news.”

“Our thoughts are with him and his family. We will see tomorrow whether he is mentally and physically able to play

Eggja was best man at Alfe-Inge’s wedding and regularly helped the family, helping his friend’s son transition to life in Dortmund, Salzburg and Manchester by making sure his apartment was fully furnished so he could concentrate on his football.

He leaves behind his two sons Fabian and Felix and his daughter Ine.

City are currently top of the Premier League with nine points from their opening three games and are aiming for their fifth consecutive Premier League title.

Haaland made an electrifying start to the season, scoring seven goals in three games.

In his last two appearances he scored a hat-trick in a row against Ipswich and West Ham.

He also scored a goal for Norway during the recent international break.

After coming away empty-handed in the Nations League duel with Kazakhstan, he found the net in the 2-1 win against Austria on Monday evening.
