Enzo Maresca reveals Chelsea owners’ reaction after players visit West Ham

Chelsea co-owners Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali put aside their alleged dispute over the club’s ownership to visit Enzo Maresca and his players after the 3-0 win over West Ham, with the head coach insisting both men were “completely happy” with a comprehensive victory full of style and energy.

The pair congratulated the team together in the dressing room at the London Stadium after two goals from Nicolas Jackson and one from Cole Palmer gave the Blues three points against a lackluster West Ham side, while head coach Julen Lopetegui’s problems continued to mount.

It was Maresca’s third win in five Premier League games since taking charge, with his side scoring ten goals in their last three away games.

“Not only today, it’s always good when we win games for (the owners), especially because they were both here,” he said. “We can give them some nice moments. They were in the dressing room, they were all happy.”

West Ham lost in the fourth minute due to their weak defense.

Jadon Sancho, making his debut for Chelsea, was quickly awarded a free kick and deftly passed the ball down the left to Jackson, who marched unhindered from the touchline into the box and then skilfully fired the ball under Alphonse Areola and into the goal.

Palmer’s shot from a huge area went inches wide as the hosts faltered and the defence was powerless to prevent Chelsea’s second goal in the 18th minute. Moises Caicedo broke the backline with a simple pass that Jackson ran through and fired the ball into the corner.

At the start of the second half, Jackson provided the assist for Palmer when he strode unchallenged across the halfway line and played the English striker in, who netted at the near post.

Despite the ease with which a dynamic Chelsea side overwhelmed the hosts, Maresca warned against getting carried away by the idea that the team’s problems have all been solved five weeks into the season.

“I think we are on the right track,” he said. “We are heading in the right direction, but it is a long way. We won today and we are in a good phase, it looks like everything is fine. But not everything is fine. We could attack better, defend better.”

“For me the main goal right now is to see how we progress as a team and I think we are improving a lot of things, even if we could have managed the game much better today.

“Sometimes we need to play more passes and keep the ball. We are in a hurry and want to attack immediately. But overall I think we deserved the win.”

Hammers head coach Lopetegui has only picked up four points for his team in the five games he has been in charge and looked back on a game in which his side made it too easy for Chelsea.

“We are obviously very frustrated today because we had high expectations,” he said. “We worked hard to prepare and it was a very mild defeat.”

“We conceded two goals early on, which we could have made better use of. We were not consistent. If you don’t play consistently against a team like that, you hardly have a chance of winning.”

“We had chances, we had more possession, but that’s not important.”
