Brook is England’s stand-in captain for this series because Jos Buttler is injured, and three matches after taking over, this innings had all the hallmarks of a cliched captain’s knock.

When Phil Salt suffered a painful miss on the eighth ball and Ben Duckett scored a point for eight, memories of England’s collapse in the first two matches and their difficulties in a run of ten defeats in 14 matches in the format were revived.

Brook, however, did what many wanted England to do. In his 18th ODI, he got off to a slow start, taking six of his first 13 balls and not hitting his first scoop shot until he had already scored 57.

That’s not to say his innings lacked his trademark strokeplay, though. He smashed the ball through the off side, hitting spinner Matt Short for a glorious six over mid-off and an uppercut off a bouncer from Cameron Green.

Green had dismissed Jacks with the same stroke after England’s number three had impressed with his second fifty of the series in a quiet partnership, laying the foundation for England’s victory.

When Jamie Smith hit another green bouncer to deep square leg, England – helped by the absence of Australian leg-spinner Adam Zampa through illness – still needed 108 from 109 balls. However, Livingstone ensured that the momentum was finally on the hosts’ side when the rain began to fall.

He hit Mitchell Starc for two fours and Sean Abbott for a six in the two overs before the players left the field.
