Emmy winner Jodie Foster is a mother of two: What you should know about her children

Jodie Foster has won two Oscars and now an Emmy, but to her children she is simply a dedicated mother with lots of advice for life.

The mother of two won her first Emmy for outstanding lead actress in a limited or anthology series or movie for her role in “True Detective: Night Country” at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards on September 15. In her acceptance speech, she publicly gave advice for her two sons, Charlie and Kit.

After paying tribute to the Inupiat and Inuit people of northern Alaska who “just told us their stories and allowed us to listen to them” as part of their collaboration on the series, she said, adding, “It was love, love, love – and when you feel that, something amazing happens. It’s deep and wonderful and it predates this place in this time. That’s just the message, which is ‘love and work equals art.’ To my boys, Charlie and Kit, remember that.”

The actress, who is married to artist and filmmaker Alexandra Hedison, told ABC News’ Lara Spencer backstage at the Emmys that as a mother, she finds it “fulfilling” to watch her sons grow into adults.

“They’re at a stage in their lives — I have a 23-year-old and a 26-year-old — that is so fulfilling to me because everything seems to be a step forward, even when they’re having heartache in their work and career,” she said. “But I think they’re really starting to love life and find joy in doing something meaningful, you know? And they want to be part of something meaningful, and that kind of spiritual impulse is what really makes great art.”

Jodie Foster’s eldest son, Charlie Foster, was born on July 20, 1998.

According to his mother, he is now an actor and told Spencer that he is preparing to shoot his first independent film.

Jodie Foster had previously described her eldest son as “super charming” and “super spontaneous”.

When her children were younger, the “Silence of the Lambs” star did not want her children to know that she was an actress.

“I didn’t want them to even know I was famous. I remember when my son (Charlie) was about 4 years old, he thought I was a construction worker,” she told Net-a-Porter in 2018.

In a 2016 interview with Magic Radio, Jodie Foster described why her sons thought she worked in construction: “Sometimes they would come on set and see guys with hammers and tool belts and stuff, and I think they thought I was in construction.”

Kit Foster was born on September 29, 2001.

While his older brother wanted to follow in his mother’s acting footsteps, Kit Foster is a scientist.

Jodie Foster told Spencer at the 2024 Emmys that she “didn’t understand a word he was saying.”

Even at a young age, the actress described her younger son in interviews as a “hyperfocused scientist.”

She said in 2016 that she had waited “many years” to show Kit Foster her film “The Silence of the Lambs” because she knew it was “a little sensitive.”

The Oscar winner said she hesitated for years to even show her sons her acting work because she didn’t want them to get to know her as an actress.

“They didn’t know what I did for a living,” she told Magic Radio, adding: “I didn’t really understand why I was doing it, but now I understand.”

She continued, “I didn’t want them to know me that way. I just wanted them to know me as their mother who went off and did a job she loved. I didn’t want them to know my personality. As they get older, I think they’ll be able to handle that a little bit better.”
