Emily Campbell: Olympic weightlifting medalist dreams of opening her own gym

Campbell’s efforts to open a gym and become increasingly involved in her local community in the East Midlands were supported by the newly formed ChangeMakers., external Fund – an initiative of the National Lottery, UK Sport, Team GB and ParalympicsGB.

Athletes can apply for funding for community projects. A total of £100,000 is available.

Campbell, who won a silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics, believes that with the help she has the chance to “make a real impression.”

“This is the first time we’ve actually done something that I feel will leave a real legacy,” she said.

“It’s OK to come back and see the athletes running around, showing off their medals and taking photos with the kids – it only lasts for a short time.

“This is something we can take into our communities and that will last.”

Attracting a wide range of people to the gym and continuing to promote positive body image are all topics she talks about with a smile when she discusses her future.

That smile grew even wider when she spoke of her “wild” time winning the bronze medal in Paris, and she was still beaming when asked the inevitable question about another Olympic bid.

“It’s four years until LA and it’s going to be a big decision where I’ll have to sit down with my team and discuss whether we’re going to do it or not,” she said.

“Besides, I’m in my 30s now, I’m not getting any younger, and there are other things I want to achieve in life.

“I have to balance things. Will it happen now or after LA? I don’t know.

“I’m going on holiday next week, eating everything up and having a good time. Then when I get back I’ll discuss everything with the team and see what’s next for me.”
