El Paso school district lowers tax rate, but homeowners face higher bills

During Tuesday’s school board meeting, the El Paso Independent School District approved a new tax rate for the 2024-2025 school year.

The new tax rate is $1.08, five cents lower than the tax rate for the 2023-2024 school year.

School districts are among the several taxing authorities to which homeowners pay taxes.

County officials explained during the board meeting that despite the lower tax rate, homeowners would still have to expect a tax increase.

The increase will coincide with the increase in property values and tax authorities will see an increase in taxable values.

According to officials, the average taxpayer in EPISD will see a raise of $10 per month.

KFOX14 spoke to homeowners in the district who said they would be OK with a tax increase as long as the money is used responsibly.

“They forget that they are stewards of our tax money. So I think they need to be held more accountable to parents and students. They need to reach out to the community more and ask us what we think is important,” said Gwen Pulido, EPISD property owner.
