Eggs and water balloons are thrown as protesters face off at the Women Will Speak rally in Melbourne | Women

During the clash between demonstrators and counter-demonstrators in front of the Parliament building in Melbourne on Saturday, projectiles were thrown at speakers and one person was arrested.

About 20 people initially attended the planned #WomenWILLSpeak rally, which began around 11 a.m., Victoria Police said in a statement.

They were far outnumbered by 150 protesters from another group who “threw eggs and water bombs at the speakers involved,” the statement said.

A 36-year-old Brunswick woman was arrested at the scene for the alleged attack on police and released pending further investigation, police said.

No injuries were reported.

“Victoria Police are disappointed with the group’s actions. While supporting peaceful protests, they have a zero-tolerance policy towards any violent or disruptive acts that impact the wider community,” police said.

A live stream of the rally posted on YouTube by the Women’s Action Group showed a cordon of police in yellow vests separating the #WomenWILLSpeak event from a large crowd gathered with signs.

In the same livestream, some of the protesters from the Women Action Group camp can be seen holding signs that read “Trans women are men,” “Gender medicine investigation now,” and “No male cheaters in women’s sports.”

On Wednesday, a post about the rally was published on the Facebook page Trans Queer Solidarity, saying: “We must outnumber them and limit their recruitment, as we have done before.”

“Their campaigns are harmful, including targeting transgender youth and trans women who are criminalized by the state,” a post on the site said.
