EF1 lands in Granville County between Oxford and Henderson

A viewer named Terry Watson shared a picture with WRAL News of a tornado in Granville County on Friday.

Another viewer named Kathy Hudson shared video of the apparent tornado on Friday as it appeared to cross Interstate 85 near Oxford. The area is near Vance-Granville Community College.

“We pulled over to the side and kind of watched,” she told WRAL News. “Then I realized, ‘Oh my God, my husband is right. I have to give him credit.’”

The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a tornado warning for Granville and Person counties until 7:15 p.m. Friday. Hudson said she wasn’t nervous at first. On Saturday, the NWS confirmed that the tornado that touched down was an EF1 with peak winds of 105 mph.

“I only got nervous when we saw all the metal and debris,” she said. “I thought, ‘Forward!’ Because if we hadn’t, I think it would have come right at us.”

More residents around Granville County captured images of the possible tornado whipping around, with some debris falling to the ground. Hudson said she felt a rush of multiple emotions as the vehicle passed behind her.

“It was amazing, scary and exciting,” she said. “Just everything at once.”

WRAL News has reached out to the NWS to confirm whether a tornado has touched down, while Hudson said she will take tornado warnings more seriously if she sees it in person.

The NWS confirmed three more tornadoes in central North Carolina on Friday:

  • A Friday afternoon in Nash County
  • The other on Friday morning in Sampson County
  • Last Friday in Durham County.
