Earthquake of magnitude 5.1 shakes Malibu

A magnitude 4.6 earthquake (subject to change) has struck Malibu and other nearby communities, according to numerous initial reports.

The quake, originally measured at 5.1 but later downgraded, was felt in Hermosa Beach, La Mirada and parts of the San Fernando Valley. The city of Anaheim reported “no known issues or concerns” at this time.

“We felt a rolling, strong earthquake in Anaheim,” the City of Anaheim posted on X. “Initial reports are 5.1 (subject to change) near Malibu. We will monitor reports and facilities as we are not aware of any issues or concerns in Anaheim at this time.”

KABC reported that the quake struck Southern California at a depth of nearly 6 miles (9.6 kilometers) starting at 7:28 a.m. today. A magnitude 2.8 aftershock struck just minutes later.

The US Geological Survey reports that the epicenter of the quake was 3.5 miles northwest of Malibu and 4.9
miles southwest of Agoura Hills, 6.4 miles southwest of Agoura, and 7.1 miles southeast of Thousand Oaks. The earthquake was felt in Burbank and Santa Clarita.

There are no reports of injuries or damage.
