Eagles stock rises, stock falls after preseason game against Patriots – NBC Sports Philadelphia

FOXBOROUGH, Massachusetts – Another week, another exciting end to the preseason.

It’s almost a shame that one of these things still exists. Almost.

The Eagles rested many of their stars and starters on Thursday night, but there were some Eagles who did themselves a favor in the 14-13 victory over the Patriots, and some who may have hurt themselves.

The Eagles will practice again on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Their final preseason game will be next Saturday afternoon.

Here is the latest stock report after Thursday’s game:

Stock up

OL Mekhi Becton

If you needed any more proof that Becton is the Eagles’ starting right guard, you got it Thursday night. Becton was taken out of the game with the other offensive players and Tyler Steen played. Steen began training camp as the right guard, but suffered an ankle injury on day three and the Eagles started playing Becton the next day. Although Becton has had some ups and downs learning a new position, he is clearly the starter.

DB Avonte Maddox

It seems like Maddox is pretty much a full-time safety these days. He started Thursday night and ended the Patriots’ second drive with an interception in the end zone. He picked off a pass to Austin Hooper and then returned it 47 yards to set up an Eagles field goal drive. It’s a big play for a guy who could be a valuable and versatile backup if he stays healthy. Maddox also had 3 tackles and a pass defense before being taken out of the game.

LB Zack Baun

After a rocky start last week in Baltimore, Baun looked much more confident as an off-ball backer against the Patriots on Thursday night. He started the game alongside Devin White. That wasn’t the case when they practiced together on Tuesday, but the duo was back in the game.

LB Nakobe Dean

The bad news for Dean is that White and Baun were off the field long before him, but Dean made the most of his snaps. The good news is that Dean had a solid night with five total tackles.

QB Tanner McKee

By the time McKee came on early in the second half, the Patriots had already shut down their better defensive players, so McKee wasn’t running for his life like Kenny Pickett. But it’s hard to ignore that McKee just looks good. He looks confident on offense and the ball just looks good coming out of his hands. He completed 15 of 19 passes for 140 yards and orchestrated a game-winning 70-yard drive with a 2-point conversion to get the win.

DT Moro Ojomo

The second-year defensive tackle continues to push hard for playing time. He was able to be disruptive a few times on Thursday night. We know Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis and Milton Williams are the starters, but Ojomo has a chance to carve out a real role for himself.

OLB Nolan Smith

Smith picked up his second sack in as many games. This time he fought through a running back chip and then had a straight line to Drake Maye. He took him down with force. Smith may be a little undersized, but he showed strong finishing on his two sacks this preseason.

TE EJ Jenkins

No one could really capture the TE3 job, and Jenkins should be there. He’s been good all training camp and pulled it off in this game after a rare drop in the season opener. His 18-yard diving catch from Will Grier was impressive. Jenkins has been dealing with a few injuries, but said after the game that he’s doing OK.

RB Will Shipley

Shipley showed real explosion on 2nd and 22, gaining 19 yards on a screen pass. He was well blocked by Dylan McMahon and made a move to get to the second level.

WR Joseph Ngata

The big receiver was targeted five times and caught five balls for 88 yards. After the game, AJ Brown came out of the locker room and told a group of reporters that Ngata was the star of the game. He definitely had a good night.

Inventory is decreasing

DB James Bradberry

Although he looked solid in training camp, Bradberry definitely didn’t look good at safety in this game. He missed a couple of tackles in this game and was unable to force a defensive lineman out of his slot on a Drake Maye touchdown and didn’t live up to his responsibilities. It’s definitely an experiment that took a step in the wrong direction against the Patriots.

OL Tyler Steen

While Becton was able to rest with the starters on Thursday night, Steen attempted to play despite his ankle injury and had to leave in the first quarter. Steen went into the blue tent and then had to be brought inside. I give him credit for trying to save his job despite his injury, but he needs to get healthy again and the Eagles need to start preparing him for his role as a backup.

OL Max Scharping

The Eagles went with their third offensive line in the first half, and Scharping, at left tackle, allowed a couple of quick sacks by Keion White and then Deatrich Wise Jr. The Eagles probably brought Scharping in to give themselves another option at guard, but he played tackle. It was a rocky start to the night for him.

John Ross and Johnny Wilson

Two of the players vying for a chance to become the Eagles’ WR3 are now in the NFL’s concussion protocol. Wilson was unable to play Thursday after suffering a concussion in joint practice, and Ross suffered his during the game.

Quarterback Kenny Pickett

Yes, the line in front of him wasn’t good, but you probably would have liked to see more from the Eagles’ second quarterback. On Thursday, Pickett completed 11 of 13 passes, but only for 67 yards and an average yard attempt of 5.2.

New kickoff coverage

The Eagles are getting used to the new kickoff rules and still have a few things to improve. They allowed a 32-yard and a 53-yard run in this game to give the Patriots offense from their own 36 and +47.
