Eagles star WR leaves game against Saints after heavy blow

Early in the fourth quarter, Eagles wide receiver DeVonta Smith had his helmet blown off after being hit hard by Saints defensive tackle Khristian Boyd, and he lay on the ground for several minutes before running away under his own power.

Smith was already boxed in by two Saints defenders when Boyd came in and ripped his helmet off. The game continued for a while, but the referees did not blow their whistle when Smith was tackled.

After Smith was evaluated in the medical tent, he went to the locker room to be checked for concussions. Eagles wide receiver Britain Covey suffered a shoulder injury in the second quarter and was ruled out. Without Smith and Covey, the Eagles are down to three healthy wide receivers: Jahan Dotson, Johnny Wilson and Parris Campbell.

The Eagles are down 12-7, so they need to score more points to win. Running back Saquon Barkley ran for a 65-yard touchdown after Smith was injured, and he could become the focal point of their offense on the final drives.

Quarterback Jalen Hurts will target tight end Dallas Goedert and Barkley in the passing game. The Saints could send a lot of players into the box to block the running lanes, which would force the Eagles to pass on their final drive.
